Avoid This Food For Your Dog!

Some foods which are edible for humans, and even other species of animals, can pose hazards for dogs because of their different metabolism. Some may cause only mild digestive upsets, whereas, others can cause severe illness, and even death. The following common food items should not be fed (intentionally or unintentionally) to dogs. This list is, of course, incomplete because we can not possibly list everything your dog should not eat.

Items to avoid Reasons to avoid
Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death.
Baby food Can contain onion powder, which can be toxic to dogs. (Please see onion below.) Can also result in nutritional deficiencies, if fed in large amounts.
Bones from fish, poultry, or other meat sources Can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system.
Cat food Generally too high in protein and fats.
Chocolate, coffee, tea, and other caffeine Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems.
Citrus oil extracts Can cause vomiting.
Fat trimmings Can cause pancreatitis.
Grapes and raisins Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. There have been no problems associated with grape seed extract.
Hops Unknown compound causes panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures, and death.
Human vitamin supplements containing iron Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys.
Large amounts of liver Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones.
Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle.
Marijuana Can depress the nervous system, cause vomiting, and changes in the heart rate.
Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs and cats do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhea. Lactose-free milk products are available for pets.
Moldy or spoiled food, garbage Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhea and can also affect other organs.
Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death.
Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder) Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions.
Persimmons Seeds can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis.
Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract.
Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock.
Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella.
Raw fish Can result in a thiamine (a B vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly.
Salt If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances.
String Can become trapped in the digestive system; called a "string foreign body."
Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus.
Table scraps (in large amounts) Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced. They should never be more than 10% of the diet. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed.
Tobacco Contains nicotine, which affects the digestive and nervous systems. Can result in rapid heart beat, collapse, coma, and death.
Yeast dough Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines.

Simple Steps To Choose Best Dog Food

There is to much brands of commercial dog food in the market, so we must to know how to find a good one for our dog. Nowadays, the use of commercial dog food is become an important part of our dog life. Practically, reliable price, good nutrition is become our consideration as the owner of the dog. The fact is, still many peoples that is frequently confuses, how to choose the good commercial dog food. This is the simple step for you how to choose best dog food for your dog.

We have to choose "Super Premium Dog Food" as our dog meals. My boxer dog always give this classes of dog food. What is "Super Premium Dog Food"? To be able to differentiate it, We must to know all of the dog food classes, and it has diverse classes based on their contents.

  • Grocery Dog Foods

This is the lowest class of commercial dog foods. We can find it in the supermarkets or pet shops. Most of qualified grocery dog foods use main basic stuffs from cereals, hulled rice, and corn. The raw materials of protein are extracted from eggs, and flours bones, animal blood, and other by products such as tongue, heart, and other innards. Almost most of grocery foods use preservative.

  • Premium Dog Foods

This kind of dog food has used main basic stuffs extracted from animal meats, like cows, chickens, fishes, eggs, and by products included innards. The carbohydrate content is not too much.

What makes different from grocery is that most of premium quality dog foods haven’t used chemical favor anymore. The stuff that is used as favor comes from natural stuffs such as dry cheeses, egg flours, etc. the nutrition content of this kind of dog food has good enough so that it doesn’t needed any other addition foods. The preservatives that are commonly used are animal fat, vitamin C, and vitamin E. In some countries, these products are only available in the pet shop.

  • Super Premium Dog Foods

The stuffs which are used to make dog food of super premium quality, usually use the food stuffs which have health standardization and with the same quality which is used by human beings (human grade). For example, chicken is only taken for its breast (chicken breast) which has least fat content.

This product hasn’t used by products anymore such as innards, bones, blood, furs, etc. the other stuffs which can appear allergy like corn, and soybean hasn’t already in use. For general carbohydrate sources are taken from white and red hulled rice, oatmeal. Some sources are taken from holistic or organic stuff which indicate that the product is yielded without using chemical stuffs such as hormone, or pesticide. Also, some only use fresh products such as unfrozen meats in order to keep the super premium quality and its nutrition content.

Some brands of super premium quality dog foods haven’t used preservatives anymore, instead of them, it is used high quality of packing like aluminum foil, to keep the quality. Whereas super premium quality of dog food still use natural preservatives such as Rosemary Extract, animal fat, vitamin Esther C, and vitamin E. On the package is usually labeled by words indicate content and the quality of dog food.

From the three kinds of commercial dog foods above, I really recommend to use super premium quality dog food. Don’t be affected by the logo on the package. But we have to perceive the content. There are still many dog foods of low quality which label the package with words “Super Premium Quality Dog Food”.

There are tips that I can give to choose good commercial dog food:

  • Choose the dog food which has long expire
  • Visit the websites of dog foods
  • Learn its content
  • Having test terms for 2 weeks, then see whether our dog has problem with it or not
What I have told above is very simple step to find best dog food, hopefully this information is usefull

How To Feed Your Boxer Dog?

Is your Boxer Dog has had eating pattern? In fact, until now, there are still many people who haven’t had good knowledge in giving right eating pattern to their lovely dogs. Something seems trivial, but actually can give big effect to our Boxer’s health.

All of creatures in this world need balance nutrition, including us as human beings. If the humans eat to much carbohydrate, for example, the effect is that someday that person will suffer from diabetes. Likewise with our lovely dogs, if there happened either excess or lack of nutrition, surely will have bad consequences to their health. Not now! But in their next future!

There are still many dog lovers who feed their pet dogs with human foods (such as: chocolates, candies, junk foods). Although we feel mercy to the dogs, it’s actually not good for them. Human foods generally are fried, spicy, fatty, or starchy which have different nutrition contents from dog’s needs. For example, a day which consumes too highly protein can lead to: itches, crooked leg bones, such as lack of calcium, kidney stone, etc. If there’s excessive fat, it may cause digestion upset, diarrhea, etc.

I try to share with you about good and health eating pattern. Here’s the rundown order based on the best priority:

All Meats

I think this is the best for our dogs. Dog is a carnivore. Before united with humans, dogs had only eaten meats of their preys. Sometimes, I feed them with the refined meats (raw meats), then I flush with boiled water to assure that either germs or blood had gone away from the meat. Actually, there are many experts or doctors recommend to feed them with raw meats, but that’s up to your choice.

Make Your Own Fresh Foods

This is the second best way, according to me, because we ourselves who ensure that the fed nutrition contents are the best. You can find variety kinds of recipes from animal’s doctors or the experts. Commonly, the puppies were fed with variety kinds of meat (chicken, beef, lamb) added by few eggs, cheeses, and vegetables. The problem is that not everyone knows the recipes of the making. If you want to do this, just consult it to your vet.

Use Commercial Super Premium Quality Dog Foods

Dog food with super premium quality is not only has good content but also its producer’s company spends big funds of research to get the best quality. So, I always feed all of my dogs with the dog foods of this quality. You can learnt more about what is super premium dog food here.

I usually feed my boxer dog with 400 gram of it daily. I feed it with 200 gram in the morning, and the rest of 200 gram are given in the afternoon. Make sure that drink water is always available for your boxer dog. My suggestion is, just follow what’s recommended on its package.

If the dog food has good quality, our dog’s litter is usually formed in solid. That means the absorbance of the dog food in its body is maximum. There are still some possibilities why dog’s litter is mushy. It may because there’s digestion upset, or maybe because we change the brand at once. My suggestion is, if you want to change the brand, it’s better to mix it up with the old brand in half portions of both. Then decrease the old brand in sequence.

Commonly, for commercial dog food, it’s different between dog foods for puppy and for matures. The former has higher protein content and actually not only for puppy but also for my pregnant Boxer.

Finally, from the story above, we can make conclusion that the most important thing, is to feed a properly balanced diet with sufficient nutrition, for a dog to be intelligent it has to be sufficiently and adequately nourished.

That's my other story for your boxer dog. Find more about what is super premium dog food for your here.

How To Feed Your Boxer Puppy?

Boxer puppy, you are ought to have the right knowledge of how the best way is to feed your lovely Boxer. Why does it become a crucial factor? That’s because your puppy’s health is determined by their eating. A daily good nutrition will help to develop the growth of their bones, muscles, and other important organs maximally. Well, of course, their health is fully our own responsibility as an owner, as someone whom they depend on.

As an owner who has just adopted a Boxer puppy, you were probably confused of how to start with. What is suitable and not for them. Here I’m trying to tell you the answer based on what I know and what I’ve done completely.

Here’s the rundown of the steps:

  • For The Suckling Boxer Puppies

The newly born Boxer puppy surely needs mother-breast. The milk from its mother has a very highly nutrition, so that feed them with their mother’s milk directly will be the best for them.

The problem is, if we find a newly born Boxer puppy which actually doesn’t want to suckle from its mother. There are some causes for that, which are: maybe the puppy is premature so that it doesn’t have enough strength to suckle. It may also because there is a disorder on its body’s function, or probably because its mother doesn’t want to feed the puppy (it usually happens with a mother whom has puppy for the first time ever). In the case where the puppy doesn’t want to suckle from its mother is commonly happens, if we don’t solve it quickly, it’s able to cause death toward the puppy.

What should we do? I usually give instant milk which is specially designed for dogs (usually available at pet shops or vet). Another alternative is, we can give them goat’s milk. What about instant milk for human being? May we feed them with cow’s milk? It’s important to know that milk for human or cow’s milk contains a very highly lactose so that it doesn’t suitable for them. The highly lactose content can cause diarrhea, and if it happens to a puppy, it will have fatal effect; exactly it leads to the death.

Try to keep the suckling from its mother at least until 3 weeks ages (if it is possible until 3 months ages). But it’s important to be perceived! Make sure that each of your Boxer puppies get mother-breast, because commonly there are some dogs which are dominant to get mother-breast, if it doesn’t perceived, there will be a puppy which doesn’t get the mother-breast, and it’s hazardous.

Here’s what I do, if my Boxer puppy needs addition milk:

Until a week age

120-180 milliliters, divided into 6 times /day

Until 2 weeks ages

150-250 milliliters, divided into 5 times /day

Until 3 weeks ages

240-320 milliliters, divided into 4 times /day

Until 4 weeks ages

280-400 milliliters, divided into 4 times /day (coarse, not submerged or diluted with water) twice /day

Beside that, try to serve your dog his meals at the same time each day and in the same location so that he will get used to his daily routine and develop good eating habit.

  • For The Boxer Puppies Which Consume Solid Foods
Since 3 weeks ages, I usually have made my Boxer puppy accustomed to consume dog food that I soak first in warm water (not the hot one) for 1-2 hours, so that this dog food that is fully mushy just likes porridge for human babies. In the 3 weeks ages, your Boxer’s digestion hasn’t perfect yet, so that it’s not really recommended to consume the solid foods. Just bribe slowly to your Boxer puppy’s mouth, or if your puppy has been able to eat by itself, adjust it to eat in a lively group with other friends, so that it appears spirit for your puppy to eat.

Here are the steps that I do:

Around 1 month age

100 gram of dog foods per puppy (watery) 4-5 times /day

Until 2 month ages

200 gram of dog foods per puppy (begin to slightly coarse) 4 times /day

Until 3 month ages

300 gram of dog foods per puppy (slightly coarse) 4 times /day

Until 4 month ages

400 gram of dog foods per puppy (coarse, not submerged or diluted with water) twice /day

Actually, amount of food consumed will vary depend on activity level, age, and environment. For best result, you can consult with your vet or see the instruction on your dog food packing. Addition milk is only fed as an interlude, besides, I also feed addition supplement such as multivitamins and calcium for their health.

These are the stories based on my own experience as a breeder and a Boxer lover. I try to share about what I’ve learnt from variety of sources, discussed with vet, and my own experience of growing a Boxer puppy. As far, what I’ve done above surely works. Hopefully this information is useful for you. Remember me to your lovely boxer puppy :D
